Das Interesse für eine empirische Untersuchung von Zweisprachigkeit wurde durch meine eigene Zweisprachigkeit ausgelöst. Ich bin als Deutsche in Portugal aufgewachsen, habe eine portugiesische Schule besucht und zu Hause nur Deutsch gesprochen. Ich habe mir schon immer die Frage gestellt, warum ich lieber deutsch spreche und lese, als portugiesisch, die Sprache, die ich besser beherrsche. Dass ich lieber in Deutsch lese, ist mir insofern klar, als dass in Portugal eine signifikante Literaturlücke herrscht, viele der bekanntesten internationalen Autoren sind nicht einmal übersetzt. Das hat meine Lektüregewohnheiten durchaus beeinflusst.

Aber sprechen? Wie kommt das, geht es anderen Bilingualen auch so? Einige Vorüberlegungen zum Thema äußerten sich folgendermaßen: Wenn davon ausgegangen wird, dass ein Zweisprachiger beide Sprachen regelmäßig verwendet, hat sich dann eine subjektive Präferenz für eine dieser Sprachen entwickelt? Da Subjektivität nur schlecht definier- und messbar ist, wird Präferenz anhand der Sprachwahl in unterschiedlichen Bereichen untersucht. Kielhöfer/Jonekeit behaupten: „Allgemein gesehen ist die besser beherrschte Sprache die starke Sprache. Der Zweisprachige bevorzugt sie bei freier Sprachwahl, weil er sie besser kann, und er beherrscht sie wiederum besser, weil er sie häufiger benutzt“ (1995:12). Im Kontrast hierzu behaupten Müller et al., dass „die Verwendung der präferierten Sprache mit anderen Kindern, die auch zweisprachig sind, sowie die Traumsprache nicht notwendigerweise etwas darüber [aussagt], wie intestine ein style eine Sprache beherrscht“ (2007: 84).
